Except for the
first day, when it was raining for about 90 minutes we are spoiled with the
weather and everybody confirms that it is unusual for this time of the year. We are spoiled with blue sky, warm sun and
moderate wind. It is very chilly in the shade but the sun is so beautiful,
warming and gives the perfect holiday feeling.
We
discovered Capetown from the waterfront, from a boat, went on the ferris wheel
, strolled through the main shopping streets and along the harbour and pretty
much enjoyed and soaked in the city.
You can
forget about the fact that you are in Africa. The weather, the people, the
cars, the infrastructure… everything feels like Europe… maybe southern Europe
where everything is not AS organized as in Germany… but still nothing exotic
about this city.
A few observations
regarding the different skin colours have been made though. Okay, apartheid was
banned in 1994 which is not really long ago and definitely not enough for a
society to adjust. You can hardly find any group of people with mixed colours.
Black people stick together and play football, white people like Rugby. Waiters
are 90% black people, guests in restaurants are 90% white people. When I went
jogging in the morning I only met black people going to work. White people seem
to sit in their cars or exercise on the beach. However, you can see kids at
school or in sport teams are mixed and hopefully this is the generation that
will make a difference to the long established habits…
Unfortunately
safety is always an issue. Certain things you just cannot do because you’d risk
to be robbed, like climbing a little hill outside the city or going anywhere by
foot after dark…
But so far
we found enough entertaining things to do.
Everybody wants to own such an apartment with the boat:
The famous "table cloth" on top of Table Mountain.
Enjoing the views from the ferris wheel:
Coca Cola man built from the typical red crates:
At the V&A Waterfront, a vibrant harbour city with shopping malls and restaurants:
Lions Head and Table Mountain view from the bay
Every day a breathtaking sunset... unfortunately at 5:30pm already.
